Cabinet meeting minutes, 1923-1928.

The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of executive decisions and actions. In order to better fulfill the duties of the office, Governors William Woodward Brandon (1923-1927) and Bibb Graves (1927-1931 and 1935-1939) convened the heads of the executive departments and other state agencies as the governor's cabinet during portions of their administrations. The purposes of the cabinet meetings were to discuss matters of interest to state government and to encourage efficiency in all aspects of state work. Governor Brandon ordered the cabinet secretary to take minutes of each meeting and to enter the minutes into a bound volume. This series consists of minutes created to provide information about the topics discussed during the cabinet meetings as well as about who attended each meeting. Topics discussed during the cabinet meetings included the monies collected by each state department or agency, equalization of salaries among departments, the state capitol building, and the construction of a new building for the Dept. of Archives and History.
